Creative Leadership

Creative Direction and Production Intelligence

18 April 2025

Why the best ideas usually belong to the people who know how they'll be made.

The separation of creative and production is a convenient fiction. It works on an org chart and almost nowhere else. Ideas that arrive with no sense of how they'll be built tend to be rewritten by the schedule, the budget or the weather.

Production intelligence isn't caution. It's knowing which part of an idea is load-bearing and defending that part while everything else negotiates. It's why a treatment can survive a scope change and still be the thing that was sold.

The most useful creative leaders I've worked with can hold both at once: they can originate, and they can cost it in their head while they're doing it.
