AI and the Value of Taste
22 January 2025
When execution gets cheap, judgement becomes the product.
The interesting question isn't whether the tools can make images. They can. It's what happens to a creative economy where the cost of a first draft approaches zero.
What's left is selection: knowing which of a thousand outputs is the one worth building, and why. That's taste, and taste is still made the slow way — by seeing a lot of work, and being responsible for a lot of decisions.
The craft doesn't disappear. It moves upstream, into what gets chosen and who gets trusted to choose.
